Rovaniemi Airport sits about 10 km north of the city centre and about 3 km from Santa Claus Village. That second number is the one worth remembering: if you are staying at the Arctic Circle, your transfer is over almost before it starts, and you will be at your hotel while the people heading into town are still on the road.
The cheapest way out is the Airport Express bus, 8€ per person one way, which meets arriving flights and loops through the central hotels and Santa Claus Village. The fastest and easiest with children and ski bags is a taxi, roughly 35 to 40€ for up to four people into the centre and roughly 20€ to Santa Claus Village. There is no airport train, no metro and no city bus line to the terminal, so those two options plus a hire car or a pre-booked car are the whole picture.
Pre-book the ride from Rovaniemi Airport

Prices here were checked in September 2026. The winter 2026-27 Airport Express ticket was not yet on sale then, so the 8€ fare is the ticket currently listed.
The Airport Express has no fixed timetable in the way you might expect. It meets arriving planes and otherwise runs about every 25 minutes between 09:00 and 21:30, leaving from directly in front of the arrivals door. There is no cash on board: buy online or pay the driver by card. Seats cannot be reserved, and an online ticket stays valid for months rather than only on the day you bought it, so buying before you fly costs you nothing in flexibility. The service runs for travellers from November to March, with a summer service as well.
One planning point that catches people out: a flight landing after about 21:30 falls outside the bus window. Plenty of charter and low-cost arrivals in December do exactly that. If your inbound lands late, sort a taxi or a pre-booked car before you fly rather than at the kerb with three tired children.
What a taxi actually costs
A taxi from the rank comes to roughly 35 to 40€ into the centre for up to four people, or 45 to 50€ for a van taking five to eight. Taxis run on the meter, so traffic and your exact address move the fare a little. Ask for child seats when you book.
Three companies hold the ranks outside the terminal: Taksi Rovaniemi on platform 1, Lähitaksi on platform 2, Menevä on platform 3. Visit Rovaniemi also lists Santa Line. Both of the big local firms charge nothing extra for an advance order, and Lähitaksi says its driver waits right outside the arrivals hall exit, which on a dark December evening with a pushchair is worth more than a few euros of price difference. If someone is collecting you by car, the first 20 minutes of parking are free.
Getting to Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle hotels
Santa Claus Village is about 3 km from the terminal, a few minutes by car, and it sits on the airport side of town. The centre is roughly 8 km further south. The Airport Express serves the village on the same loop as the city hotels, so the 8€ ticket works either way, and a taxi is roughly 20€ for up to four.
People do walk it. It is about 2.5 to 3 km along the road and through underpasses, following the Napapiiri (Arctic Circle) signs, and roughly half an hour on foot. I would not do it with luggage, with children, or in the dark and the cold, which describes most December arrivals.
Hiring a car at the airport
The terminal lists desks or services for addCar, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Finn-Rent, Green Motion, Hertz, National, Scandia Rent and Sixt. Finavia notes that some are open only with a prior reservation, which is important to keep in mind. Turning up at 22:40 in late December hoping to arrange a car on the spot is not a plan: book the car before you fly and check the counter hours against your landing time.
Winter tyres are a legal requirement in Finland from November to March, so any car you pick up here in winter will be on them. Everything else about driving here, from reindeer on the road to how long a 200 km hop really takes in the dark, is a separate subject.
Who flies here in winter 2026-27
Finnair flies Helsinki to Rovaniemi several times daily year-round and Norwegian several times a week, with a flight time of 1h15 to 1h55. That is the backbone: almost any long-haul connection into Helsinki can be joined to a Rovaniemi flight the same day, though I would not leave a tight gap in December.
Direct winter routes are unusually thick for an airport this size. Last season Rovaniemi had direct flights from 38 international airports. For winter 2026-27, easyJet and Ryanair between them cover most large UK cities, easyJet adds Newcastle from 25 November 2026, and British Airways starts Gatwick services on Mondays and Fridays from 4 December 2026. From the German-speaking market, Lufthansa opens Munich to Rovaniemi from 4 December 2026 to 26 March 2027 on Fridays and Sundays, about 3h20, alongside Lufthansa Frankfurt, Eurowings from Düsseldorf, Berlin and Hamburg, easyJet Berlin, Austrian from Vienna and Edelweiss from Zurich. Elsewhere Visit Rovaniemi lists KLM from Amsterdam, several carriers from Paris and Milan, Iberia from Madrid, Vueling and Norwegian from Barcelona, Turkish Airlines from Istanbul, LOT from Warsaw and a daily Finnair hop to Tromsø.
Seasonal routes are announced, moved and dropped every year, and most run only from late November to March. Confirm dates on the airline’s own site rather than on any list, including this one. Tour operators also run Christmas charters into Rovaniemi, but those seats are sold as packages, not as flights.
The terminal: what is there, and what is not
This is a small single-terminal regional airport that has grown fast. It opened in 1940, the current terminal dates from 1992, an expansion in 2018 to 2020 added 5,000 m² and lifted hourly capacity from two aircraft to four, and a further extension of nearly 1,000 m² to the departures hall reopened on 28 October 2025.
Before security there is Köngäs Café, which bakes its breads and pastries on site and serves coffee and snacks, plus one of the two Napapiirin Lahja gift shops. After security, Ahkio Kitchen and Bar opens 1 hour 45 minutes before departures and does salmon soup, pizza, burgers including a reindeer one, and salads, with the second gift shop alongside. Baggage storage costs 10€ per item at the Info Desk and is available daily from 03:30 to 01:00.
What the terminal does not do is stay open all night. It opens two hours before departing flights and closes after the last one, so sleeping airside between a late arrival and an early departure is not an option. I could not confirm an ATM, currency exchange, lounge, family room or winter clothing hire, so do not build a plan around any of them. Finland is close to cashless anyway, and cards work everywhere.
Christmas elves and Santa himself greet passengers in the baggage claim hall in season, and the carousels are decorated to match. Nobody can promise he will be there on your particular flight, so treat it as a bonus rather than the moment your children have been promised.
Arriving in December
Rovaniemi handled about 1.1 million passengers in 2025, up 18.4% on the year before and its first year over a million. Roughly 300,000 of those, more than a quarter of the whole year, came through in December alone.
Nearly half of all traffic was international, and the UK was the largest single source market. A small Arctic terminal running at that density for four weeks behaves exactly as you would expect.
Weather adds the other variable. De-icing and snow clearance cause routine short delays all winter, and occasionally something bigger: last winter, storm Hannes stopped traffic from 16:00 to about 22:40 on Saturday 27 December 2025, around 20 flights rolled over to the next day, and Finavia opened the old terminal and handed out water, sleeping pads and blankets to the hundreds of people waiting. Normal service resumed on 29 December. That is rare, but it tells you what to pack in hand luggage: warm layers, snacks, phone chargers, any medication.
The practical rule is not to book anything you cannot lose within a few hours of landing. No same-day onward connection, no non-refundable husky safari that evening, no train you must catch. Land, get to the hotel, start the holiday tomorrow morning.

Departing: parking, queues and timing
Finavia’s own advice for the winter holiday season is to arrive well in advance, and on a December charter morning that means giving yourself more than the two hours you would allow at a quiet regional airport. Security has one small hall to work with.
If you have driven yourself, parking is 19€ a day or 165€ for 30 days if you pay by app, and a little more at the machines by the terminal doors, which do not take American Express. There is EV charging in P1.
If you are still deciding where to sleep and what to book, the Rovaniemi city, hotel and Santa Claus Village guides cover those in detail. This page stops at the kerb.
How I researched this
I built this guide in September 2026 from Finavia’s Rovaniemi airport pages and newsroom releases, the Airport Express operator’s own site, Visit Rovaniemi’s winter 2026-27 flight list, Santa Claus Village’s visitor information, Finnair, and the published fare tables of Lähitaksi and Taksi Rovaniemi. The taxi figures are estimates I calculated from those tariffs, not fares quoted by a company. Nobody from Lapland Trip Planner has flown into Rovaniemi for this page; this is a researched comparison, not a review, and bus fares, schedules and flight dates all change, so confirm with the operator before you travel.

Common questions
How do I get from Rovaniemi Airport to Santa Claus Village?
The village is about 3 km from the terminal and is a stop on the Airport Express bus loop, which costs 8€ per person one way and meets arriving flights roughly every 25 minutes between 09:00 and 21:30. A taxi is roughly 20€ for up to four people and takes a few minutes. The city bus line 8 runs to the village from the centre, but it does not serve the airport.
Is there a bus from Rovaniemi Airport to the city centre?
Yes, the privately run Airport Express, which leaves from directly outside the arrivals door and calls at the railway station, the bus station and the main central hotels. It takes 10 to 15 minutes plus stops and costs 8€ per person one way, payable online or by card to the driver. There is no cash payment and no municipal bus line to the terminal.
How much is a taxi from Rovaniemi Airport?
Expect roughly 35 to 40€ into the city centre for up to four people and 45 to 50€ for a van seating five to eight. To Santa Claus Village it is roughly 20€. Taxis run on the meter, so traffic and your exact address move the fare a little.
Can I sleep at Rovaniemi Airport between flights?
No. The terminal opens two hours before departing flights and closes after the last flight of the day, so it is not available overnight. If you have a long gap, store bags at the Info Desk for 10€ per item, which is possible daily from 03:30 to 01:00, and spend the time in the city or at Santa Claus Village.
How early should I arrive for a flight in December?
Give yourself more than the usual two hours. December carries more than a quarter of the airport’s annual traffic through one small terminal, so security, bag drop and the car hire return queues all run long on charter mornings, and Finavia specifically advises arriving well in advance during the holiday season.
Best Booking Resources for Lapland
These are the booking tools I keep coming back to. They consistently offer the best prices, the most relevant options for northern Finland, and actually work well for Lapland-specific searches, which not all platforms do.
- Kiwi.com: The best source for finding flights and airport connections. I have noticed they find flight connections that other search engines miss.
- Booking.com: I almost always use them for booking hotels and apartments (and occasionally flights). They have the best filters and I like the user-friendly interface.
- Hotels.com: The most popular hotel booking platform in many countries, US included.
- Get Your Guide: A massive selection of tours and excursions, including aurora tours, husky rides, reindeer experiences and more!
- EconomyBookings: Want to explore Lapland or chase auroras yourself? They pool together the best offers from car rental operators for your convenience.
- yesim: Need a local SIM for Lapland? A stress-free holiday nowadays (unfortunately) might start from a good connection, so get an eSIM with unlimited or prepaid data.
- Ekta Traveling: Not interested in checking out the Finnish public health care system on your holiday? Didn’t think so 🙂 Good insurance gets that stress out of the way.
