Where to Stay in Lapland: 20 Places Worth Booking, by Base and Budget

Updated 5 October 2026.

Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you book through them, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend services I genuinely trust for Lapland travel.

Choose the base first, then the hotel. That order matters more than anything else on this page: the base decides what your week actually looks like, and the room only decides how you sleep. Rovaniemi gives you Santa, an airport 10 km away and the widest choice of beds. Levi gives you skiing and a week without a car. Saariselkä and Inari give you wilderness, the darkest skies and most of the glass roofs. Muonio, Luosto and Kilpisjärvi give you quiet and better value than either of the big two.

Then the money. A hostel dorm bed in Rovaniemi starts at 29€ and a small glass igloo at Kakslauttanen with breakfast and dinner starts at 424€, and everything worth booking sits somewhere between those two. The other number to hold onto: March rates run roughly 60 per cent below December. Same snow in March, deeper in fact, at a fraction of the price.

Pick the base by the trip

Lapland is bigger than people expect. Rovaniemi to Inari is 330 km, about four hours of driving. You are not day-tripping between these places casually, so the base you pick is the holiday you get.

BaseWhat it’s forNearest airport
RovaniemiSanta Claus Village, the widest choice of hotels, easiest without a carRovaniemi (RVN), 10 km
LeviSkiing, restaurants, a car-free week with lifts on footKittilä (KTT), 15 km
SaariselkäWilderness on the doorstep, glass roofs, Europe’s northernmost ski hillIvalo (IVL), 25 km
InariSámi culture, Lake Inari, dark skies with almost no light pollutionIvalo (IVL), 40 km
Muonio and EnontekiöHuskies, quiet, noticeably cheaper bedsKittilä, 70 km
Luosto and PyhäSmall, quiet, short transfer, good with young childrenRovaniemi, 120 km

Without a car, stay in Rovaniemi or Levi. Both work on foot plus shuttles. Everywhere else assumes wheels or paid transfers, and those transfers add up quickly.

What a night actually costs

What a night actually costs

These are the bands the whole page works from. Prices below carry their source and date. The glass-roof and aurora-cabin rates are 2026-27 season listings checked in September 2026. The ordinary hotel and self-catering cabin bands are still last season’s research, because Lapland hotels publish no rack rate and their 2026-27 rates move with the date on Booking.com.

Glass igloo, shoulder season250-450€
Glass igloo, December to February400-990€

Notice the gap between the mid-range hotel and the glass igloo. That gap is where most trips go wrong, because people book seven glass nights and then discover the food budget is gone.

Local tip: The way most people actually afford the glass roof is a village hotel at 90 to 130€ a night plus one igloo night in the middle. One night is enough. The novelty of sleeping under a heated glass ceiling has a half-life of about four hours, and if the sky is cloudy on your one night, you have lost one night’s premium rather than a week of it.

Rovaniemi: the widest choice

Arctic TreeHouse Hotel sits next to Santa Claus Village, and its suites have a north-facing glass wall rather than a dome. Suites started from about 355€ for the 2026-27 season, breakfast included. It closes for May and June.

Apukka Resort is 16 km out on a lake, with aurora cabins under a heated glass roof and activities running from the property. Aurora cabins ran from about 395€ for the 2026-27 season. Far enough from the city glow to matter, close enough to keep the transfer short.

Arctic SnowHotel and Glass Igloos in Sinettä, about 30 km from town, is the one place where you can do a snow room and a glass igloo on consecutive nights. The glass igloo started at 314€ for the 2026-27 season, with breakfast and an aurora alarm included; the snow hotel and ice restaurant run from mid-December to the end of March only.

In the centre, Arctic Light Hotel is the boutique choice and publishes no rack rate, though city luxury in Lapland generally lands between 290 and 500€ in 2025-26 research. Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus on the main street is the dependable mid-range pick: 130 to 250€ for most of the winter and 300 to 420€ in December on 2025-26 research. Hostel Cafe Koti is the budget answer, and its September 2026 price list makes it look better than most guides suggest: dorm beds from 29€ without breakfast, and with breakfast included a standard twin from 69€, a superior twin from 85€, a triple from 98€ and family rooms from 119€. Rovaniemi is also the easiest base for museums and day trips, and Visit Rovaniemi keeps the current opening times for the village and the Arctic Circle attractions.

Levi: skiing and a week without a car

Levi: skiing and a week without a car

Levi Hotel Spa and Design Hotel Levi is the central complex, with the Water World pool area, several restaurants and a walk to the lifts. The hotel does not publish rack rates; aggregators put Levi four-star hotels around 120€ a night on average in August 2026, and considerably more in December. Hotel Levi Panorama is up on the fell, ski-in ski-out, with Sky Suites that have glass-roofed igloo rooms attached. Winter rooms start from 193€ a night in late November.

Hotel K5 Levi puts a private sauna or whirlpool in every room and has villas sleeping 7 to 14 with fireplaces, but sells only through its own booking engine. Golden Crown Levin Iglut is the full-dome option, 27 glass igloos on Utsuvaara 10 km from the village, with suite igloos with a private outdoor jacuzzi from about 395€ for the 2026-27 season. Northern Lights Village Levi has aurora cabins with heated glass roofs and a reindeer farm on site, from about 499€ for the 2026-27 season, reopening 1 October 2026.

And then the option most visitors skip: a rented chalet with a sauna. Levi has thousands. Budget chalets run 55 to 120€ a night, mid-range 150 to 310€ on 2025-26 research, and for a family of four or five that beats every hotel room on this page. The lift pass situation and the trail network are covered on Levi’s official site.

Saariselkä and Inari: wilderness and dark skies

Northern Lights Village Saariselkä has 80 aurora cabins with laser-heated glass roofs, from about 239€ on the September shoulder rate for the 2026-27 season. The December to February peak runs far higher, so book the shoulder if you can.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is the original, 10 km south of the village, and the price includes breakfast and a three-course dinner because there is nowhere else to eat. A small glass igloo started from 424€ with meals for the 2026-27 season, with the November to February peak at 800 to 1,000€. Book it for one night, for the story, and know exactly what you are paying for.

Star Arctic Hotel sits on the Kaunispää summit with design suites, glass cabins, a restaurant and a bar, so you can eat dinner without going back down the fell. Rates start from about 360€ for the 2026-27 season; the season runs 30 October 2026 to 4 April 2027 and transfers cost 85€ per car. Santa’s Hotel Tunturi is the big village hotel with 260 rooms, five restaurants, saunas and bowling, from about 90 to 100€ on aggregators in August 2026. Kiilopää fell centre puts hostel beds, hotel rooms and cabins at the trailhead into Urho Kekkonen National Park, with a proper smoke sauna; hotel rooms show roughly 110 to 260€ on aggregators. The park’s trail maps live on nationalparks.fi.

North of there, Wilderness Hotel Nellim has aurora cabins with laser-heated glass on Lake Inari under some of the darkest skies in Finland, half board included, from about 210€ for the 2026-27 season. Wilderness Hotel Inari is the year-round option in the village itself, from 124€ a night on the chain’s site in August 2026, and it sits in Inari village, where the Siida museum is. Season details for both areas are on Visit Inari-Saariselkä.

Muonio, Luosto and the far north

Muonio, Luosto and the far north

Harriniva, Jeris and Torassieppi near Muonio are one group across three sites: the 400-dog husky farm at Harriniva, aurora domes on the lake at Jeris, snow igloos and reindeer at Torassieppi. Budget rooms ran 100 to 135€ and mid-range 135 to 190€ in the site’s 2025-26 research, and the Jeris aurora domes run from about 320€ for the 2026-27 season. That is real money saved against Levi or Rovaniemi for the same winter.

Arcora Boutique Hotel and Villas is the Harriniva group’s new premium resort in Muonio, opening for winter 2026, with rates not yet published.

Santa’s Hotel Aurora at Luosto has glass-roofed suites in a resort with an amethyst mine and a small ski hill, with igloos from about 285€ with breakfast for the 2026-27 season. At Kilpisjärvi there is Lapland Hotels Kilpis, and the Arctic Land Adventure glass igloos run from about 560€ for the 2026-27 season, the northernmost glass igloos in Finland, up in the north-western corner by the Norwegian border with dry skies and the Halti fells. Lapland Hotels SnowVillage at Lainio, 30 km from Levi and 15 km from Ylläs, is rebuilt out of snow and ice every winter; it reopens 25 December 2026, the ice exhibition costs 26€ for adults from 5 December 2026, and room rates come out in the autumn.

One pick each

One pick each

  • Best for aurora: Wilderness Hotel Nellim. Dark skies on Lake Inari, half board included so you are not driving out for dinner, and a glass roof you can watch from bed.
  • Best for families: Santa’s Hotel Tunturi in Saariselkä or Levi Hotel Spa for the pool. Arctic TreeHouse next to Santa Claus Village if you are splurging.
  • Best on a budget: Hostel Cafe Koti in Rovaniemi, Kiilopää in Saariselkä, or a Levi chalet split between a family. All three leave money for huskies, which is the point.
  • Best glass roof for the money: Northern Lights Village Saariselkä from about 239€ on the September shoulder rate. The full transparent dome experience is Kakslauttanen or Levin Iglut, and both cost more.
  • Best for walking to the lifts: any Levi centre hotel, or Hotel Levi Panorama if you want to click in at the door.

Cabins and apartments: the Finnish default

Finnish families do not book hotel rooms in Lapland. They rent a mökki with a sauna for a week, drive up, fill the boot with food and cook. Almost every cabin has both a kitchen and a sauna, and the sauna is not an upgrade or a feature, it is simply what a Finnish building has.

The kitchen is where the maths changes. Eating out in Lapland runs 60 to 90€ a day per person at restaurants, with casual mains at 18 to 25€ and Lappish mains at 28 to 40€. Cook most meals and you land in the 30 to 45€ band instead, saving 30 to 40€ a day. K-Market and S-Market cover every resort town and stock better than visitors expect.

Local tip: Search Lomarengas, Nettimökki and Levin Matkailu before you search the big international platforms. They list far more Lapland cabins, because that is where Finnish owners actually advertise. The listings are plainer, the photos worse and the properties better.
When to book

When to book

The aurora season runs from late August to early April. Peak rates fall between November and February, while September to October and early April still give you dark nights at 30 to 50 per cent below peak. Glass and aurora stays for December to February need six months or more of lead time, and the good ones go earlier than that. Christmas and New Year run 800 to 1,600€ a night for a glass roof and want booking 6 to 12 months ahead. If you are reading this in the autumn hoping for a glass igloo at Christmas, the answer is next year.

Late February and early March bring the Finnish school ski holidays, and they fill Levi and Ylläs with domestic families. After those weeks, prices drop 30 to 40% while the snow is at its deepest, around 75 cm, and daylight has climbed to nearly 11 hours by mid-March. Aurora nights are shorter than in January but still frequent enough, and clear-sky odds hold up. Book a car early for March too, because Finnish demand is high.

Local tip: The ski holiday weeks move by region: southern Finland, the capital area and the north take different weeks in February and early March. Check which week your dates fall in before you assume March is quiet, because the Finnish school ski-holiday weeks in late February and early March fill Levi, so availability tightens and rates rise in those specific weeks.

Distances that catch people out

The glass igloo you booked is usually not in the village. Kakslauttanen is 10 km south of Saariselkä. Golden Crown Levin Iglut is 10 km from Levi centre, up Utsuvaara. Star Arctic sits 3 km up the Kaunispää fell and charges 85€ per car for a transfer. Wilderness Hotel Nellim is 45 km beyond Inari village. Apukka is 16 km from Rovaniemi, Arctic SnowHotel about 30 km, SnowVillage 30 km from Levi.

None of that is a problem if you have a car or the rate includes meals. It becomes a problem when you have booked a remote dome with no restaurant, no transfer and a plan to “pop into town for dinner”. Between the bases themselves: Rovaniemi to Levi is 170 km and two hours, Rovaniemi to Saariselkä 260 km and three hours, and Saariselkä to Inari a manageable 70 km, about an hour.

Local tip: Ask one question before booking any out-of-village stay: is dinner included, and if not, how do I get to food? Half-board resorts like Kakslauttanen and Nellim look expensive until you price two restaurant meals a day plus a taxi. Then they often are not.
How this page was researched

How this page was researched

Glass-roof and aurora-cabin prices are 2026-27 season listings checked in September 2026. The ordinary hotel and self-catering cabin bands are still last season’s research, labelled 2025-26 in the tables, because Lapland hotels publish no rack rate and their 2026-27 rates move with the date on Booking.com. Where an operator publishes nothing, this page says so rather than guessing. Nobody from Lapland Trip Planner has stayed in these places; this is a researched comparison, not a review.

Create a free Booking.com account before you book: Level 1 Genius is instant and takes about 10% off many stays, which for a Lapland stay is worth more than any code you’ll find.

Best Booking Resources for Lapland

These are the booking tools I keep coming back to. They consistently offer the best prices, the most relevant options for northern Finland, and actually work well for Lapland-specific searches, which not all platforms do.

  • Kiwi.com: The best source for finding flights and airport connections. I have noticed they find flight connections that other search engines miss.
  • Booking.com: I almost always use them for booking hotels and apartments (and occasionally flights). They have the best filters and I like the user-friendly interface.
  • Hotels.com: The most popular hotel booking platform in many countries, US included.
  • Get Your Guide: A massive selection of tours and excursions, including aurora tours, husky rides, reindeer experiences and more!
  • EconomyBookings: Want to explore Lapland or chase auroras yourself? They pool together the best offers from car rental operators for your convenience.
  • yesim: Need a local SIM for Lapland? A stress-free holiday nowadays (unfortunately) might start from a good connection, so get an eSIM with unlimited or prepaid data.
  • Ekta Traveling: Not interested in checking out the Finnish public health care system on your holiday? Didn’t think so 🙂 Good insurance gets that stress out of the way.
