Arctic Light Hotel turns Rovaniemi’s old city hall into a boutique hotel, with the city centre right outside the door. It is made for couples who want restaurants and shops on foot; every room sleeps two, so a family needs more than one.

Arctic Light Hotel: boutique rooms for two in the old town hall, in the city centre
What Arctic Light Hotel actually is
The building is Rovaniemi’s former city hall, built in 1949 on Valtakatu in the middle of town, converted into a hotel in 2015. The hotel markets itself as “The Original Boutique Hotel in Rovaniemi” and runs 57 rooms in ten categories, from an 18 m² loft mini up to a 53 m² Christmas Cabin.
What a night costs in winter 2026-27
A double for two costs 518€ a night in late November and mid-January, 618€ in mid-March and 825€ in the February hiihtoloma (the Finnish school ski-holiday week).
| Dates | Rate per night | Cheapest room |
|---|---|---|
| 20 to 23 November 2026 | 518€ | Arctic Double or Aurora Loft Double |
| 5 to 8 December 2026 | Not on sale | |
| 27 to 30 December 2026 | Not on sale | |
| 15 to 18 January 2027 | 518€ | Aurora Loft Double |
| 20 to 23 February 2027 | 825€ | |
| 10 to 13 March 2027 | 618€ | Polar Street Double |
Rates are Booking.com prices per night for two adults, checked at the end of September 2026. Prices are for the 2026-27 season and change annually, so check current rates for your dates.
The Polar Double with sauna was 618€ in late November, 100€ more than the cheapest double. For the December dates marked not on sale, ask the hotel directly.
The rooms: ten categories, all for two
Ten room categories run from 18 to 53 m², and the hotel’s room list gives every one of them a maximum of two guests.
| Room type | Size | Sleeps |
|---|---|---|
| Aurora Loft Mini | 18 m² | 2 |
| Magic Double | 20 m² | 2 |
| Magic Twin | 26 m² | 2 |
| Aurora Loft | 30 m² | 2 |
| Arctic | 36 m² | 2 |
| Polar | 36 m² | 2 |
| Suite | 40 m² | 2 |
| Polar Street | 43 m² | 2 |
| Polar + | 45 m² | 2 |
| Christmas Cabin | 53 m² | 2 |
The two smallest categories are small by any standard: 18 m² is a bed, a bathroom and enough floor to open one suitcase at a time. If you are staying four nights with bulky winter kit, the step up to a mid category earns its money. The Polar Double with sauna is the one to pick if you want a private sauna in your own room.
What a night includes
Breakfast is the headline. The hotel calls it “THE Breakfast” and builds its identity around it: fresh seasonal ingredients, local dishes alongside international classics, with a room-service version available.
Beyond that: a sauna, free parking and a pet-friendly policy. The in-house Arctic Restaurant serves northern cuisine built on local ingredients, and the city-centre restaurants are on foot.
Where it sits, and why that matters
The railway station, the restaurants, the shops and the Arktikum museum are all on foot from the door. Santa Claus Village is 8 km and the airport about 10 km north of the centre, so the airport transfer is short and the village is a bus or taxi ride rather than a walk.
A central base pays off on day tours: they collect from the city centre, which saves the transfer fees a resort base adds. Visit Rovaniemi lists what runs from the centre in any given season.
Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
It suits couples who want character rather than a chain lobby, solo travellers who want to walk to dinner rather than eat alone in a resort restaurant, and anyone building a city-based trip out of day tours. It also suits people travelling with a dog.
Look elsewhere if you are a family, if you want glass over the bed, if you want the resort experience where the huskies live on site, or if your budget tops out below 500€ a night in winter.
Two guests per room: the thing that decides your booking
The hotel’s room list caps every category at two guests. A family of four needs two rooms, and two rooms at 518€ each is 1,036€ a night, which buys a large cabin or a family suite almost anywhere else in the region. The one family option is a Family Junior Suite sold on the booking sites, at 888€ a night in mid-March and 1,035€ in late November and mid-January.
The aurora, honestly
You are in the middle of a lit city. Rovaniemi’s street lighting kills faint aurora, and a strong display will show through it but a typical one will not. If seeing the northern lights is the point of the trip, you book a tour that drives away from the city, or you drive yourself away from the city lights, or you stay somewhere dark. The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s aurora forecast tells you which nights are worth the drive.
No room here has a glass roof or a bed under the sky. If that image is what sold you on Lapland, this is not the hotel.
Alternatives in and around Rovaniemi
Arctic TreeHouse Hotel has design suites with a view, out by SantaPark rather than in the centre. Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara sits on the Ounasvaara fell, 4 km from the centre by road, with sauna rooms and a ski slope at the door. Santa Claus Holiday Village is built for families, at the village itself, which solves the two-guest problem and the Santa logistics in one booking.
Booking timing, especially for December
Early December and the Christmas week go first in Rovaniemi: both December windows in the rate table were off sale at the end of September. If your dates are in December, ask the hotel and book as far ahead as you are willing to commit. If your dates are flexible, late November and mid-January were the cheapest windows at 518€ a night.

How I researched this
Non-price facts come from arcticlighthotel.fi in September 2026 (room categories, sizes, occupancy, breakfast, sauna, parking and the pet policy) and from Visit Rovaniemi (the building’s history and the room count). Nightly rates are Booking.com rates as shown on Google Hotels on 30 September 2026, for two adults on the dates in the rate table. Nobody from Lapland Trip Planner has stayed here; the verdict is a researched comparison, not a review.
Compare the alternatives named above

Common questions
How much does Arctic Light Hotel cost in winter?
A double for two was 518€ a night in late November and mid-January, 618€ in mid-March and 825€ in the February school ski-holiday week, on booking-platform rates checked at the end of September 2026. December was not on sale.
Is breakfast included?
The hotel builds its identity around what it calls “THE Breakfast”, a spread of seasonal local and international dishes, with a room-service version available. Whether it is in your rate depends on the rate you pick.
Can a family of four stay in one room?
Not in a standard room. The hotel’s room list gives every category, including the 40 m² Suite and the 53 m² Christmas Cabin, a maximum of two guests. The booking sites also list a Family Junior Suite, at 888€ a night in mid-March; otherwise a family of four needs two rooms, which in winter usually costs more than a family cabin elsewhere in Rovaniemi.
Can you see the northern lights from the hotel?
Only on a strong night, and not well. The hotel is in the lit city centre with no glass roofs or aurora cabins. Plan on a tour or a drive out of town if the lights are your priority.
How far is it from Santa Claus Village and the airport?
Santa Claus Village is 8 km and the airport about 10 km north of the city centre. The railway station and the Arktikum museum are within walking distance of the hotel door.
Best Booking Resources for Lapland
These are the booking tools I keep coming back to. They consistently offer the best prices, the most relevant options for northern Finland, and actually work well for Lapland-specific searches, which not all platforms do.
- Kiwi.com: The best source for finding flights and airport connections. I have noticed they find flight connections that other search engines miss.
- Booking.com: I almost always use them for booking hotels and apartments (and occasionally flights). They have the best filters and I like the user-friendly interface.
- Hotels.com: The most popular hotel booking platform in many countries, US included.
- Get Your Guide: A massive selection of tours and excursions, including aurora tours, husky rides, reindeer experiences and more!
- EconomyBookings: Want to explore Lapland or chase auroras yourself? They pool together the best offers from car rental operators for your convenience.
- yesim: Need a local SIM for Lapland? A stress-free holiday nowadays (unfortunately) might start from a good connection, so get an eSIM with unlimited or prepaid data.
- Ekta Traveling: Not interested in checking out the Finnish public health care system on your holiday? Didn’t think so 🙂 Good insurance gets that stress out of the way.
